Futuristic Fresco

Press play — the text unfolds with the artist's voice.

For several years,

Lia Bagrationi has

collected discarded polyethylene

bags — objects

typically designed for

short-term use and

considered devoid of

value.

Over time, these

everyday materials have

become an archive

of daily life.

To create Futuristic

Fresco, she ironed

thousands of plastic

bags and reassembled

them into a

single continuous surface

that covers the

gallery walls like

a fresco.

Within this work,

the act of

ironing functions as

a deliberate artistic

gesture.

Bagrationi reinterprets one

of the most

invisible forms of

women's domestic labour,

transforming repetitive acts

of care into

a material language

that records the

traces of human

existence.

Futuristic Fresco emerges

from a long

process of accumulation,

preservation, and transformation.

At the centre

of the installation

is a video

in which polyethylene

bags, animated by

air currents, remain

in constant motion.

The relationship between

the static surface

of the walls

and the moving

image reflects two

possible states of

memory — one

fixed and one

in flux.

The installation forms

part of Bagrationi's

ongoing project, Earth

is Female, in

which the Earth

is understood as

a space of

accumulated memory and

lived experience.

Through this work,

Bagrationi imagines a

future in which

polyethylene becomes one

of the defining

archaeological witnesses of

our era.

Just as contemporary

societies interpret past

civilizations through surviving

material layers, she

proposes that future

generations may one

day read the

history of our

own time through

these artificial strata.

In this sense,

Futuristic Fresco is

presented as a

speculative artefact arriving

from the future

— a trace

of an epoch

that has left

its self-portrait upon

the surface of

the Earth.
